What is KOVAR?

KOVAR is a Virginia Knights of Columbus 501(c) (3) tax exempt charity established in 1971 to empower nonprofit organizations with financial support to improve access to affordable housing, job training, sports participation, and personal care for Virginians with Intellectual Disabilities.

We endeavor to implement the Knights of Columbus core values of integrity, professionalism, excellence, and compassion into all our efforts. We aim to become a trusted and collaborative partner with all stakeholders invested in improving the quality of life for Virginians with Intellectual Disabilities. We respect all regardless of creed, intellectual abilities, race, or ethnic origin.

1953-2024

KOVAR mourns the loss of 20 year Board Member and Past President, Dr. Daniel (“Dan”) Hurley.

Dan was a graduate of Fairleigh Dickenson University, graduating with a D.M.D., Dentistry. He served in the United Sates Army for 15 years before another 15 year career at the Defense General Supply Center as a systems analyst. Dan was active in the Knights of Columbus, serving in many capacities, including Grand Knight of Council 395. Dan’s service led him to his beloved charity, KOVAR, a Virginia Knights of Columbus Charity assisting Virginians with Intellectual Disabilities.

Dan is survived by his wife, Kathy, his son Mike, his daughter Erin, and several grandchildren.




Daniel Thomas Hurley Obituary


Dr. Daniel (Dan) Thomas Hurley, Major (Retired), born in Queens, NY on December 8, 1953, went to be with the Lord on August 13, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents Daniel Patrick Hurley and Laura McLean Hurley and his brother Robert Hurley. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Kathryn Rogan Hurley, his son Michael (Laura) of Medinah, IL and daughter Erin of Henrico, VA along with his grandchildren Brooke (8), Teddy (6) and Jack (4) and his siblings Sharyn McGrath (Kenneth) of Ballston Lake, NY and Brian Hurley (Lynn) of Lindenhurst, NY and sister-in-law Virginia Hurley of Clayton, NY.

Dan met the love of his life through the Newman Club at Brooklyn College, marrying Kathy shortly after graduation in February 1975. They enjoyed traveling the states and Europe during his time in the U.S. Army as a dentist. Dan was thrilled to retire to warmer weather in Richmond, VA in 1994, where he then worked for the Defense Logistics Agency as a Systems Analyst before retiring in 2014. Dan was an avid golfer. He enjoyed playing golf with his son and friends from the Knights of Columbus. Dan’s favorite place to golf was any course in Myrtle Beach.

Throughout his entire life, Dan served others through his work and within the community. His biggest passion shined through his work with the board of KOVAR, serving persons with intellectual disabilities. Dan was on the board for 20 years, serving as VP Home Loans and President during that time.

Dan was a faith filled man throughout his entire life. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Road, Richmond, VA 23229, on Saturday, September 28 at 11:00am followed by inurnment at the columbarium at St. Mary’s. A reception will follow at an off-site location.
